Laws were passed in 1935 that increased the discrimination against Jews, including banning them from many public places. Sophie began to complain when two of her Jewish friends were not allowed to join the League of German Girls and she was banned from reading from the ‘Book of Songs’ because it was written by a banned Jewish writer named Heinrich Heine. Sophie disputed that Heine was essential for understanding German literature and began to develop a much more critical attitude toward the Nazi regime. She started to make friends with people who were politically sympathetic to her views.
